People Judge First with Their Eyes

Authors interested in selling books should take some tips from birds.

A Strong Cover can Help Readers Find Your Book!

Birds have developed extraordinary plumage to attract mates. On top of that, they make some pretty wild warbling calls and do funky little dances. In the case of your book, feathers and dancing are probably out of the question, so go with an awesome cover instead.

There are hundreds of thousands of eBooks out there, with an average of 3,000 more being uploaded every day. In the face of such competition, your book cover needs some serious mojo to break out of the pack.

Choosing a Book by Its Cover

While browsing in a bookstore, the average customer looks at a book cover for 8 seconds…or less. For online shoppers, it’s even more cursory. In the battle to capture a customer’s attention, the best asset that you can have is a strong cover.

The promise of quality is what turns a “browser” into a “buyer”; when the process of evaluation is condensed into only 8 seconds, your book’s cover has to scream: “I am worth your time and money! YOU NEEEEEED ME!” For those reading between the lines, you are correct: in the world of online shopping, your awesome story, strong characters, and slew of 5-star reviews won’t mean anything if a prospective buyer doesn’t like your cover. Why? Because, if they don’t like the cover, they’ll never click through to see all of the great information on your book’s product page.

A strong cover makes a huge difference. Don’t take chances; get a pro.

Getting Some Powerful Mojo

The entire purpose of an eBook cover is to entice the reader to take the next step and click. This is not as easy as it sounds.

A great cover is persuasive without being pushy, drawing the reader in with a promise. It must be seductive, but not revealing. It has to portray the story without telling too much of it. It is eye-catching, but not flashy. This is a delicate balance, and to navigate it successfully takes real talent―not just a couple of classes in Photoshop 101.

This is not to cast any aspersions, as there are a few active authors with a background in marketing, book design, and who are pretty darn good at using Photoshop.  They make their own covers and it works.  For those writers who don’t have that background, though, why take chances with such an influential element of your book?  Let an artist help you create a cover that’s perfect for your book.

What an Awesome Cover Can Do for You

“I bought this book because I liked the cover.”

When I’m wading through Amazon comments, I see that statement all of the time—even on negative reviews.  Whether its print or digital, a book cover is designed to improve sales. Period.

As sales increase, income increases—and that means a change in lifestyle.  What kind of change?  At the beginning, maybe it’s a simple as increasing your savings or taking pressure off of paying your bills.  But as sales grow, you can afford that new car, a nicer school, a weekend vacation.  And when things really get rolling, quitting your day job and getting out of the rat race becomes a real possibility.

Your book is not only an expression of your creativity, but it’s also an investment in your life. Augment that literary portfolio with some great artwork.
